Adsense ABCs

There are a lot of ways to make money online, but none of them are cheaper or easier than Google Adsense. This article is an introduction to Adsense for newcomers to internet marketing. It explains the basic principles of the Adsense program and offers helpful advice on how to get started with Adsense.

What is Adsense?

Adsense is Google's contextual advertising program. "Contextual advertising" is just a fancy term for ads that are actually relevant to the content of the Web site where they appear. To fully explain what Adsense is and how it works, we have to take a step back and explain how Google makes billions of dollars from advertising.

As you probably know, Google is a search engine. You want to find something on the internet, you go to http://www.google.com, type in a keyword or phrase, and you get a few pages (possibly hundreds!) of search results that Google believes are relevant to your search request.

At the top and along the right-hand side of each page, you "sponsored links" or ads. These are ads created by advertisers through the Google AdWords program. This program essentially allows online merchants and marketers to purchase ad space for certain specified keywords. When someone runs a search on one of the specified keywords, the advertiser's sponsored link appears on the search results page.

The higher the advertiser bids on the keyword, the higher up in the rankings it will appear. Each time a person clicks on the ad, the advertiser pays Google a commission that can range from a few cents to several dollars.

Okay, so that's where the ads on the search results pages come from. However, the search results pages aren't the only places where these ads appear. Advertisers can choose to show their ads on something called the "content network" in addition to the search result listings.

The "content network" is simply comprised of all the Web sites that feature content relevant to a given keyword and that have signed on to the Google Adsense program.

When you create an Adsense account, you are given a little bit of code that your implement in your Web site. This code allows Google to post ads on your site, and these ads are carefully targeted to your site content. You can control the placement, size, and color of the ads, and you can even exempt specific ads or companies from being listed on your site.

Each time a visitor clicks on one of these ads, Google pays you a share of the commission - typically a few cents. If you get enough traffic and enough clicks, you can earn a healthy income through Adsense alone.

The great thing about Google Adsense is that it's a way to "monetize" your Web site content with absolutely no investment. Technically, you don't even need a Web site: Adsense is a fantastic way to earn a bit of income from a blog.

If you're an aspiring internet marketer, Adsense will probably be only one arrow in your quiver. Most likely, you will still want to promote products as an affiliate and/or create and sell your own products.

Google Adsense is an effective arrow, though, and you can't beat the price.
